  • Most people only need a few basic types of coverage.
  • Many other products are highly engineered profit machines sold with buzzwords like “tax‑free growth” and “never lose money.”

I know this because I bought one — an IUL with a $250,000 death benefit for $100/month — and only later realized I had no idea what it actually was. The pitch sounded perfect:

  • “Cash value grows like the stock market but never goes down.”
  • “Tax‑free growth.”
  • “Low insurance rates forever because you sign up earlier.”
  • “Your money compounds!” (True, but the fees and costs compound too.)

If something sounds too good to be true… insurance agencies have already packaged it.

Below is an overview of the types of insurance available in the marketplace, with short opinions about each.

Life Insurance

Term Life Insurance

Term covers you for 10–30 years and pays only if you die during those years. There’s no cash value, no investments, and no complicated moving parts — just pure income protection for your family.

Opinion: This should be the product you’re offered first — cheap, clean, and impossible to manipulate.

Whole Life Insurance

Whole life lasts forever and slowly builds guaranteed cash value. It grows like a savings account — safe but painfully slow — and premiums stay high for life. Whole life only works and has benefits when you:

  • Want tax‑deferred cash value growth
  • Need tax‑free policy loans
  • Value a tax‑free death benefit

…but only after you already max out your:

  • 401(k)
  • IRA/Roth IRA
  • HSA
  • Mega backdoor Roth
  • Brokerage accounts
  • Other tax shelters

Opinion: Works best for wealthy people doing estate planning, not for someone trying to “invest $100/month for growth.”

Universal Life (UL) and Variable Universal Life (VUL)

Universal Life (UL) lets you adjust the premium and death benefit, but the cost of insurance increases as you age. If your cash value doesn’t keep up, the policy can collapse unless you pay more.

  • Opinion: Flexibility sounds great until you realize it also means “you now manage the risk the insurer used to manage.”

Variable Universal Life (VUL) mixes market investing with UL flexibility. It’s high risk, high reward, and high maintenance — if markets tank or you underfund it, the policy can implode.

  • Opinion: Think “Wall Street meets life insurance”… which is exactly as stressful as it sounds.
The One I Bought and Regret: Indexed Universal Life (IUL)

An IUL credits interest based on an index like the S&P 500 but limits your upside with caps and spreads. The “never lose money” line only applies to the crediting rate — your cost of insurance still rises every year, meaning you can lose money or have the policy blow up later.

  • Opinion: Sounds like “stock market without risk,” but it’s more like “complex engineered product with hidden moving parts that benefit the insurer, not you.”

IULs can work, but like whole life policies, the person who buys the policy would have to be high‑income, able to overfund the policy, have maxed out all other investment methods, and be dealing with estate‑planning problems that this product can solve.

Adjustable Life

Adjustable Life is a practical, middle‑of‑the‑road product for people who want permanent insurance with some flexibility. You can adjust premiums, the death benefit, and the length of coverage depending on your needs. It’s good for people who are certain they want permanent life insurance with cash value but can’t currently afford whole life premiums. It can also be beneficial for people converting from term insurance later in life because term life premiums get much higher as you age.

  • Opinion: A practical tool for some, but still more complexity than most need. Currently it’s rare and not marketed as much as IULs and ULs.
Variable Life

Variable policies invest cash value directly into market sub-accounts (like mutual fund buckets). The value fluctuates with market performance, and your death benefit can change too. Premiums are fixed, but the cost of insurance is not. If the premiums cannot cover the cost later in life, the policy will demand additional premiums or lapse.

  • Opinion: Only makes sense if you’re high‑income/net‑worth and comfortable watching your insurance double or evaporate like a crypto chart. Perfect for crypto bros.

Health Insurance

(The stuff that actually keeps you out of bankruptcy)

Major Medical – HMO / PPO / POS

Major medical coverage handles big expenses: hospital stays, surgeries, diagnostics, specialist care. It has deductibles, coinsurance, and an out‑of‑pocket max that caps your annual financial disaster. Network types include:

  • HMO: Requires referrals; lower premiums but less freedom.
  • PPO: More freedom and out‑of-network options; usually pricier.
  • POS: A mix of HMO and PPO.

Most PPO health coverage (the gold standard) is now offered primarily by major employers. Many marketplace policies on Healthcare.gov are HMOs.

Major Medical HDHP + HSA

  • Opinion: Amazing long‑term tool if you’re stable — painful if you’re paycheck‑to‑paycheck. Add an Indemnity Plan to make deductibles more affordable

Disability Insurance

Disability insurance replaces part of your income if you get sick or injured and can’t work. It protects the one financial asset people forget about: your ability to earn money. There are short‑term and long‑term policies, and the definition of disability can vary between your own occupation (gooood) or any occupation (meh).

  • Opinion: For singles or anyone who relies solely on their paycheck, disability insurance is more important than life insurance — you’re far more likely to become temporarily disabled than to die young, and losing income without protection is a financial disaster.
Long‑Term Care (LTC)

Long‑Term Care insurance pays for expensive services when you can no longer perform basic daily activities on your own — things like bathing, dressing, eating, or managing medications. It covers nursing homes, assisted living, in-home care, and memory care, all of which can cost $6,000–$10,000 per month and quickly drain savings.

LTC is designed to protect your retirement money, home equity, and family from the financial strain of long‑term illness or age‑related decline. It also gives you more choices in where and how you receive care instead of relying only on Medicaid. The earlier you buy (typically in your 50s–60s), the cheaper and more accessible it is. Once major health problems appear, you may not qualify at all.

  • Opinion: LTC insurance is pricey, but not having it can be far more expensive — one long illness can wipe out decades of savings faster than anything else in retirement.

Supplemental Health Add‑Ons

(These do NOT replace real health insurance — they’re small cash boosters.)

Accident‑Only Insurance

Accident‑only insurance pays benefits only when you’re injured in an accident — not for illnesses, chronic problems, or medical conditions. It’s designed to help cover costs like ER visits, X‑rays, broken bones, stitches, or ambulance rides after an unexpected injury. Because it excludes everything that isn’t an accident, it’s best used as a small supplemental policy.

  • Opinion: Useful as a cheap add‑on if you’re accident‑prone, but completely useless as your primary insurance — it won’t cover 99% of real medical problems.
Critical Illness Insurance

Critical illness insurance pays you a lump sum of cash if you’re diagnosed with specific major conditions like cancer, heart attack, or stroke. You can use the payout for anything — lost income, travel for treatment, deductibles, or even rent. The catch is that it only pays for conditions listed in the policy, and those definitions can be extremely specific. A diagnosis must match the policy’s exact wording, which means some cases don’t qualify even if they seem like they should. Finding a good insurance agent you trust to help you read and understand the policy is key.

  • Opinion: Sounds broad but often has specific, rigid definitions — read the fine print.
Hospital Indemnity

Hospital indemnity insurance pays you a fixed cash amount for each day you’re admitted to a hospital, regardless of what the actual medical bill is.   • Opinion: A decent add‑on for high‑deductible plans used alongside HSA accounts, but if you use it instead of major medical, you’re begging the financial gods for disaster.
Prescription / Dental / Vision / Hearing

These policies cover everyday services and preventive care. They help with budgeting but don’t protect you from catastrophic events.

  • Opinion: Nice convenience, not life‑changing coverage.

With a clear understanding of these types, you’re less likely to get sold a gremlin disguised as a unicorn — and more likely to choose the coverage that truly serves your financial life.
